Explanation of different warranty types

In case you are not familiar with terminology, here are few of the most common types of warranty that you can come across when looking to purchase the warranty.

Powertrain warranty
This is the most basic type of warranty. As its name indicates, it covers only the components that are crucial for the car to run. It includes components such as engine, transmission, drive shafts, drive wheels and differentials. For some people this basic level of protection is enough, but most of the people are looking for a more comprehensive coverage.

Bumper to bumper warranty
The most comprehensive warranty that one can find on the market today is called bumper-to-bumper because it covers your vehicle completely: from the front bumper to the rear one. In reality, not all components are covered. Instead of the list of covered parts, purchaser of this kind of warranty usually gets the exclusion list with the components that will not be covered. Usually, the components that are not covered are wear & tear items; tires, batteries, oil change etc.

Corrosion warranty
Rust and corrosion warranty often does not cover all the parts that may get effected, giving the protection only for the body sheet metal panels and applies only on those metal panels if corrosion creates holes, and only in some cases (if it is not caused by environment factors, accidents and neglect). If you consider the fact that corrosion will most likely happen when the corrosion warranty expires, factory corrosion warranty is not really beneficial to many owners. One may find extended warranties that are more comprehensive that the original one.

Wear and tear warranty
Wear and tear is damage that occurs naturally over time due to age and repeated use. This warranty covers the items that are prone to this kind of damage. Although it is often included with the new vehicle, wear and tear warranty for older cars is recently starting to become increasingly rare.

Emissions warranty
By the terms of federal emission performance warranty the manufacturers are obliged to make repairs on the vehicles in order to comply with non-conformity. Damages caused by incidental or consequential damages are not covered. There are various obligations enforced by law such as Design and defect warranty and Performance warranty, and you can read about it at laws page or examine your own warranty contract and booklet.
